Is lounge around these days.
What a lazy Sunday we are having here in the Viechec home.
Last night, I crawled out of bed for water, and look at what I see going on under the covers.
Ash came home with us at the end of February 2013, and he came into this world on the 16th of this month a year ago. We have had such a fun year in 2013 with our boy, Asher. I can’t believe he’s grown, and I still can’t believe how small he was at one time.
I will be the very first one to admit that we have had a rough year though. It wasn’t easy by any means! The only easy part about bringing a Husky into our home has been loving him, and making him a member of our tiny family.
The first few months of our transition to “Doggy Parenthood” consisted of late nights of him crying, plenty of sheets and towels going in and out of the washer and dryer, and shoe-wearing in the house all because of our little rascal. While the first few months definitely made for cute pictures and adorable “firsts,” we’re happy to be where we are now.
We know that Honey sure did have a wake up call this year. Just when she thought she’d have a little sibling to play with and run circles around all she wanted, Ash surpassed her in size within a few months… she’s been an old, pooped dog since.
To anyone out there considering a Husky for their home, and hasn’t yet known what it’s like, here’s some advice:
{x} Have a big area for your dog, whether that means living in a house with a good bit of space, or having a yard spacious enough for the dog to run around in. I don’t know how we would manage raising Ash if it weren’t for where we live. He’s rambunctious, energetic, fast, and happy all the time. Siberian Huskies need to run, and they need space.
{x} Have a good diet in mind. With any pet, you need to research nutrition facts, and look for the best food options. We went through 4 different types of food in his first year before finding the food that suits him best. Changing the diet of a pet can upset their stomachs and cause them to be sick a lot of the time. We went through a lot of stress dealing with horrific digestion issues, and dirty kennels. Huskies have allergies as it is, their food is most important in helping them be healthy.
{x} Own cleaning materials! We should all have the basic essentials, but you’re definitely going to want a vacuum, a swiffer (if in a house where you don’t have carpet,) a dog comb, and plenty of towels! If you’re on top of it all, you don’t have to worry about smells too much. You’ll be washing your Husky regularly… and vacuuming the mountains of hair also. ha…
{x} Be able to afford your animal. I can’t stress this one enough! Animals shouldn’t be a burden for you. They’re your family members, and should receive the proper care, such as Vet visits, play things, and delicious treats for when they’re good. 🙂 Chris and I being so young, and having our first pet together, we had to figure this one out the hard way. In fact, the majority of our Christmas this year was focused on expenses for Asher-Basher, and I’m not complaining. He’s our baby.
{x} Training and Obedience, which also goes along with the previous tip! If you can afford training classes, then you’re set. If you can properly train your dog already, then you have it made. Ash is a pain in our butt sometimes, because yet again, he’s our first dog, we’re young, and have never done this! Siberian Huskies are very intelligent creatures, and they pick up on things very quickly. This is how Chris was able to teach Ash every basic dog trick in the span of one day. However, Huskies are VERY known for being stubborn and thick-skulled. This is where the obedience courses will come in…
{x} Allow for plenty of play and fun!! We have only had one Husky, so we only get one view. Ash happens to be very active in that he rarely just lounges for an entire day unless he doesn’t feel good (and that in itself is rare…) Chris is very good with Ash, running around the house, playing rough with him. It’s good to be hands-on and excited with Huskies I think.
So, in just a couple of weeks we will be saying I suppose, farewell to the puppy days? Boy, have we enjoyed our big guy. Him being a part of our family makes everything so much better.
My, how he’s grown!
Everything about him has changed; from the thickness of his fur, to the scruffiness of his tail, right down to darkness of his coat. Hey, even his eyes have lightened. We kinda miss the vivid blue color though, to be honest. 😦
Isn’t he beautiful with the brown leaves under his paws? We can’t wait for Fall this year!
Ash’s first Halloween…. Oooooh!! It’s a good thing we have our very own wolf. 😉
…. A sweet, harmless one that is.Â
Lately, Ash doesn’t do too much, except for crash into things, and trip those of us that are headed somewhere.
He doesn’t realize his size, but then again, what dog does?! He does give the best hugs though. We love snuggling with this big boy. He’s so strong!
He’s very content simply lying on the floor near one of us.
He can go a good hour doing just this… and other times he’s a hippity-hoppity puppy that won’t leave you alone.<3
Oh, hello Humans.
Are you here for me…. or the blue-eyed demon?
I can be just like him, you know.
… See.
Good one, Sis.
I’m also capable of being just as majestic, and cute in human arms.
At least the horrible humans thought enough to let me out of the house!Â
At least they didn’t do this to me.
We should call PETA.
What is humanz made uf?
I think maybe I could like brother.Â
What do Wednesday’s mean, everyone!?
Well, it’s true. Not only is is the middle of the week, but it also happens to be the last day of July!
July wasn’t our favorite month, no not at all. Can fall get here please? Can it come soon?
Mom says I’m a big doofus.
What does that even mean? I just like to follow her and daddy every where they go, and touch them with my mouth. How else can I guide them to the treat jar???
Yes, Ash has surpassed many things in size.Â
He’s one big doofus that doesn’t even know how big he is.
His bum knocks things over, he chases his tail like it’s a rope toy,
and he knocks us over instead of us stepping on him by accident. He KNOCKS us over…
No one understands what it’s like to have a tail.
No one even understands what it’s like to grow this fast!
Wednesday was a drag for me.
It was a long day at work, and all I could think about while working was how I wanted to get home and see the boys.
The long day turned my mood sour, but when I got home Chris really lifted my spirits.
He told me the funniest story about Ash, and I couldn’t stop laughing for quite some time.
So, today while I was cleaning upstairs around Ash’s kennel, he did something really strange. He farted, and then barked at himself afterwards.
Wait, Chris what? You’re saying he got angry for farting?
I guess he was startled by it. He was doing that usual thing where he sleeps on his back with his belly up in the air, and his butt facing the fan.Â
So, basically he farted while he was sleeping, and then the noise surprised him and he yelped!?Â
Lately, it’s cute how vocal Ash is becoming.
The other day he was talking to his treat.
The next day he was spinning and circles, barking at his own tail.
Today, he’s yelling at his own bum…
Petco was having a sale, and I thought, “Just in time!” Ash & Honey needed a waterer. I was getting too tired of filling their bowls up every few hours. Ash drinks an excessive amount of water.
I was happy to find a very nice-looking one on their site for sale. You can find it here.
If there’s one thing I really don’t like about buying for large dogs, is that the price difference between a medium-size dog item and a large-size dog item is significantly higher, maybe sometimes $5, $10, or $20! (This being my experience lately.)
Honey is considered to be small for her size, but we would go ahead and classify her as medium. So here I have a medium dog and a large dog. I should have just bought the large waterer. If the one I had bought is as small as it is, and it’s $13, and only 6 qts, don’t you agree that for my big babies, I should have just purchased the $17 with 12 qts.
Buying online is ideal, but sometimes a mistake.
Chris put this thing together while I was gone at work.
It takes less than 10 minutes to assemble and fill up. What a deal!
Now, don’t get me wrong! I love this thing. I don’t have to fill it as often as I had to with their bowls.
This job is maybe once every 2-3 days.Â
The first few days I think took the dogs getting used to this new contraption.
They kept looking for water in their old bowls. Ash didn’t really want to use it at first.
He avoided it, until he realized that’s the only water he was getting.
So, I put it downstairs near the kitchen, and in the kennel area. When they come in from outside they
can easily get a drink of water.
Although, one day while I was upstairs I heard a bunch of noises coming from downstairs and I went down only to find
the water was almost all gone from inside of the bucket, and the towel was soaked, as was the floor. There Ash stood staring at me with a big grin on his face. He either thinks its a toy, or the tiny clicking noise from the sensor freaks him out.
Either way, he’s since grown okay with it. Â He doesn’t growl at it, or start fights. I think before, he was just being playful with it, trying to swim like he used to do with his big water bowls.
Of course, I’m the destructive one in her stories again…Doesn’t anyone recall what Honey did to their floor?
